Where black art and fantasy come together to create a magical tale.
Who is Ajá Alicia?
Heya! I’m Ajá Alicia!
My creativity really began when I was in 7th grade when I was still new to the school, so I was wandering about the library from skipping lunch. I was exploring the different genres of books when I discovered some amazing fantasy stories. This kickstart my love for the genre!
However, as I was going through the different books throughout my school years, I’ve noticed there were rarely any characters who looks like me. I’m sure they’re around somewhere at the time, but at my school, the main characters have one look about them, and it would take me out of the stories when a description about their looks came up. Even when I got into art, I ran into the same issue only this time it’s more visual.
Something had to change, and if I had to be the one to make that change, then so be it!
I want to see black faces in art and fantasy tales, so now I create portraits of black women, girls, and femmes in Afro-fantasy by fusing the African diaspora with fantasy myths, tales, and stories people may have heard or not, and put a spin with the creations.
